Update
This year’s Blackbushe Air Day is shaping up to be a record-beater! Not only have we got over 50 aircraft booked into the static display, but another 50 flying in, and more keep coming!
We’re pleased to announce we’ve got a very special North American P-51 Mustang joining us for the static. This aircraft is making its debut season this year, having been repatriated and restored at Sywell.
The P-51 is arguably the most famous US fighter of WWII, and just like its British counterpart, packs the same engine, the Merlin. We can’t wait to hear that sound as it arrives and departs the Air Day.
The Mustang was a fighter bomber, capable of over 1600 miles and was tasked with escorting bombers to and from their targets in Germany. It’s performance allowed it to climb at over three thousand feet a minute and reach 42,000 feet.
This example is a former Royal Australian Air Force Mustang, which only arrived in the UK in November, has been repainted in the colours of 44-15152/QI-T Jersey Jerk – the personal mount of Maj Donald J Strait, commanding officer of the USAAF’s 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group based at Martlesham Heath in Suffolk during 1944. Strait flew 122 combat missions to become the 356th’s leading scorer with 13.5 ‘kills’.
