Today is the 50th Anniversary of the Blackdown/Fernhurst air crash.
EC-BDD a Caravelle of Iberia inbound to Heathrow tragically crashed into the hillside on Blackdown, Haslemere at around 22.02 on 4th November 1967. All 37 on board perished.
God rest their souls.
A two day exhibition is being held at Fernhurst Village Hall this weekend. (This was used as a mortuary at the time)

A bit more info courtesy of Wiki: Iberia Airlines Flight 062 was a twin-engined Sud Aviation Caravelle registered EC-BDD operating a scheduled flight from Málaga Airport, Spain, to London Heathrow Airport. While on approach to Heathrow on 4 November 1967, the Caravelle descended far below the flight level assigned to it and flew into the southern slope of Blackdown Hill in West Sussex, killing all 37 on board. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberia_Airlines_Flight_062

The cause was thought to be misreading the altimeter and descending to * hundred feet instead of * thousand feet if I recall correctly. My family used to listen in to Police radio ( on a domestic VHF radio those days) and we heard various transmissions from the site which were not nice.

That was exactly the same way that my Dad and myself picked it up. It was chaos on there.
