G-VROM B747 has just made a safe return to Gatwick supposedly with smoke in the cockpit. It hadn't quite got as far as lands end before encountering the emergency.

Sounds like another victim of “Ophelia”
Subject: Update from UK Met Office on transport of smoke from wild fires and Saharan dust in UK atmosphere Following an unusually high number of reports of cabin fumes today in UK airspace, we have received the following from UK Met Office. “Ophelia developed over the eastern tropical Atlantic and moved north. As a result dust from the Sahara and smoke from wildfires occurring over northern Iberia has been brought northwards to the atmosphere at our latitudes.” If we receive anything more detailed from the Met Office we will advise.
