Why don't all US registered aircraft have nice big under wing reggies like that?

Given the technology available, I am surprised that there is any need for aircraft to carry external marks for aircraft manoeuvring and navigation purposes (certainly for airliners).
After all, even when on the ground, when was the last time you heard ATC ask the pilot of one aircraft to give way to Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta. Usually type and direction of aircraft suffice.
I suspect it's more for to do with ground handling, servicing and the regulatory bodies trying to ensure that the aircraft they are dealing with is actually the one involved.
