LAAS Update re airfield access, closures, under threat:-
Have just got the following update from the LAAS website regarding airfields which do not welcome spotters, or have restricted access, which maybe of some use to some members who visit lots of airfields or strips.
1. Darley Moor
2. Guist
3. Halwell
4. Haywood (Broadmeadow Farm) Access to main hangar only due to thefts.
5. Old Buckenham
6. Sittles Farm (Pre-arranged visits only)
7. Stansted (Northside business park closed to spotters)
8. Stockton- Glebe Farm
9. Weston Zoyland
Also following airfields have closed:-
1. Chalgrove
2. Wethersfield
3. Roddige
4. Aylesbury (Thame)
5. Boreham
Under Threat/ Due to Close
1. Dunsfold
2. Long Marston
3. Gamston
4. Linton-on Ouse 2020
5. Scampton 2022
This info was provided to LAAS members as the decision was made not to do an British Isles Airfield Guide for 2019- but provided us with an update instead.
Regards
AM

One more for the list this being SANDY in Bedfordshire just off the A1 apparently they don't like you taking photographs or numbers. In fact don't appear to like spotters in general. Reminds me of PANSHANGER when it was open and when I collected civil aircraft.

Two more for the list SUTTON MEADOWS because of Engine Thefts- and surprisingly Leicester East- usually onside but saw a post on the LAAS site where a spotter had been refused access as it was private property. AM

Read yesterday that there is a gate on the entrance to Fowlmere- which was always a stopping off point to see visitors to the Flying Legends at Duxford- it will be a shame if spotters are unable to visit this airfield as well. AM

Happy Days Bob Yes, sadly those with ill-intent and 'numpties' have a knack of screwing it up for the majority of sensible enthusiasts. That said, some airfield owners can be borderline odious.

Agree with you there Andy- I have made a decision to just go to flying's or major events in the future to save in some cases wasted journeys. But it is soul destroying when some of the airfields you class as bankers to go around are now shutting up shop for spotters- who in a lot of cases are their eyes and ears, especially if we see something out of place, and report it to the relevant authorities. Not exactly an Not welcoming airfield, but one that is due to close- reading this months LAAS magazine- there was a report re Wanborough Redlands Farm near Swindon, which is closing in August for the developers to move in to build an housing estate- sad days indeed. AM

If all the earmarked closures come to fruition, you've got to wonder if / how / where all the displaced aircraft will be accommodated?

I agree Andy, but regarding your screenshot that you put on which includes Redlands- there are a number of airfields in that area, where they could go too. Other fields unsure. AM

AM Just read an entry on the LAASi site- by a guy who visited Leicester East at the weekend- allowed access with Hi-Viz Jacket- but not allowed in the hangars- just view from outside. AM
