As I was driving up to RAF Coningsby the other day, travelling along mile after mile of straight Fenland roads, my mind began to wander.
Here are my resultant thoughts:
1) P-51 Mustang (Allison V1710 to Packard Merlin) 2) Avro Manchester to Lancaster (RR Vulture to RR Merlin) 3) KC-135A to R (J57 to CFM56) 4) B737 (JT8D to CFM56)
Of course, strictly speaking, the KC-135 is the only true re-engining programme using existing airframes (the others being developments).
It's also notable that the Merlin and CFM56 have been the 'game-changes'.
Are there any other 'biggies' that I've missed?

Sat in upstate New York chilling! And thinking! How about also Tays onto 727s and 111s - only 1 (maybe 2 ) converted. CFMs ?? onto DC8s and 1 707 that was de-converted later. I think the F14 got better engines later in life. Basler , and others, Daks Hunters -Saphire to Avons. Not sure if Roller powered Phantoms were better. It was reckoned the F-4Js we got later were better! Herald from 4 Leonides Pistons to 2 Darts. Jetstream from Astazou to something else I can't remember.
Mustang has to be the winner.
