The mighty Boeing 747 flies for the first time.
Following on a month or so after the first flight of the first supersonic airliner, the Tupolev Tu-144, and a month or so before Concorde, the “Jumbo Jet” was the world's largest passenger aircraft at the time.
The white heat of technology was nearing a crescendo, coming as it did a few months before Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.
