From 12 November until 7 December, personnel from the Swiss Air Force with up to ten F/A-18 fighter jets will be training for night flying at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.
40 pilots and 100 ground crew will travel to the UK in two detachments to expand and consolidate tactical capabilities and better prepare for air policing duties at night.
The training exercises – codenamed SCOTNIGHT – are an important element in Swiss Air Force night flying training, and opportunities for this type of training in Switzerland are extremely limited.
Training areas in Switzerland are small, there are high numbers of civilian flights, and it is necessary to minimise noise pollution over densely populated areas, all factors which limit night training. Flying from Lossiemouth over the North Sea there are none of these limitations and combined with the excellent infrastructure at the base, the Swiss Air Force will be able to make the most of an ideal training environment.
