Great pictures John- takes me back to my train spotting days in the early sixties- when I did both hobbies- Aircraft won in the end- but The Duchess of Sutherland takes me back as it was one of four "Semi's" which were shedded/Based at Edge Hill sheds in Liverpool. Myself and my mates used to visit the latter sheds most Sundays. Used to have the number 46233- however is looking a little more shinier than in the early sixties, which is a credit to the Swanage volunteers/enthusiasts. Thanks for sharing with us all, and taking me back to some happy times. Happy Days Bob PS- The other three Semi's were 46229- The Duchess of Hamilton, 46241- The City of Edinburgh and 46243- The City of Lancaster all ended there days at Crewe Works, having all been at Edge Hill Sheds as their last base.

Thanks for the kind comments Bob
I too was divided between trains and aircraft - mainly military in Yorkshire including RAF F86 Sabres at the local Linton on Ouse base and of course loads of quite low Super Constellations and DC6s etc to and from Prestwick to the continent.
As a kid I mostly saw LNER stuff...Mallard , Flying Scotsman and their mates but my cousin lived in Leeds and he used to take me round the LMS sheds...Holbeck, Neville hill etc but I never saw a Coronation or Duchess class...until last week when it shot through Christchurch going far too fast for a photo ! It was just visiting Swanage for the weekend Gala...came down from the Midland Rail Centre in Derbyshire...and was boootiful
Best Regards .....John C

It certainly was John, just had a look at the Midland Rail centre and they have some nice exhibits including the Duchess of Sutherland, I visited the Swanage Rail centre a few years back when visiting some very good friends in Southampton and was very impressed with the centre. Also visited Corfe Castle whilst in the area, which you have included in one of your excellent photo's. Thanks again for sharing with us all- and taking us back to our younger days. Thankfully the enthusiasts who keep these engines in tip top condition, have carried on from their younger days, to make steam and diesel locomotives accessible to all. Happy days Bob

Thanks for the pictures John. What memories. Yes, I too was a spotter, sadly though I was down amongst the Southern Electrics. I did have trips up to Guildford Shed 70C, days on the platform at Woking and lots of days at the end of the platform at Reading putting pennies on the rails. Thanks again, Dave

Thanks Dave, glad you enjoyed them Ah yes pennies on the line....we had competitions to see how big we could get them and spent ages risking our lives looking for them in the ballast after a high speed train sent them flying. Great days. John
