#OnThisDay, in 1943, Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron set out on a daring raid to attack dams in western Germany in Operation Chastise.
The Lancaster bombers were fitted with a purpose built "bouncing bomb", which led to the breaching of the Möhne and Edersee dams, causing major flooding in Germany's industrial heartland. Productivity did not recover for six months.
"The Dam Busters" were later immortalised in a film of the same name, which is being shown in cinemas across the country to mark the anniversary.
