First Aircraft Confirmed for 2017 Air Tattoo! Plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the US Air Force at next summer's Air Tattoo were given a huge boost this week following the announcement that one of the world's most popular display teams will make a rare trip across the Atlantic to take part. The Thunderbirds' performance at the Air Tattoo, which takes place on July 14-16, will be the team's only UK appearance next year and will be part of the airshow's official tribute to mark the US Air Force's 70th anniversary. As well as seeing a range of operational and historic US Air Force aircraft in the air and on the ground, Air Tattoo visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the key role the air arm plays in a range of international coalitions and partnerships. Formed in 1953, the team is renowned as much for its choreographed pre-flight ground routine - performed with pinpoint accuracy - as it is for its stunning aerial displays. Flying six F-16 Fighting Falcons, elite pilots from the US Air Force will perform a mix of formation flying and solo routines that highlight the maximum capabilities of the USAF's frontline, multi-role fighter jet. The team, which is based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, has only appeared at the Air Tattoo once before - in 2007. Air Tattoo Chief Executive Andy Armstrong said the announcement of the Thunderbirds' participation demonstrated the incredibly strong bond that exists with the US Air Force. He said: "The history - and success - of the Air Tattoo is inextricably linked to the US Air Force, on whose base the event takes place each year. I am pleased that we'll have the opportunity next summer to mark their 70th anniversary." Special reduced-price Air Tattoo 'Super Earlybird' tickets are available until January 31, priced from £29. Under-16s go free. For details, visit www.airtattoo.com or call 01285 713456.

As for the U-2s (or TR-1s as they were known at the time) I remember them well at Alconbury, and also when they took up temporary residence at Sculthorpe.

Also back in the days the LAAS base tours .Mildenhall with the SR-71 always under guard with the USAF.giving out a false statement about its opps.
The same story about U-2s at Alconbury.ONLY problem the camera would not lie.

The same story about U-2s at Alconbury.ONLY problem the camera would not lie. Maybe, in terms of the ops., but in terms of the individual aircraft involved, I'm not so sure. I've got photos of TR-1s at Alconbury with the last three digits on the fin looking decidedly temporary - stickered on. Still, it'll be nice to see the old Dragon Lady at RIAT.

Now that arrivals are beginning to descend upon Fairford, here's the latest confirmed attendee:
One of the most famous of all combat jets will make a spectacular return to the Royal International Air Tattoo this year, as the Ukrainian Air Force sends examples of the Sukhoi Su-27, NATO codename 'Flanker', for both the static and flying displays at the airshow on 15-16 July.
The Su-27, a heavy air superiority fighter, was designed during the Cold War as a Soviet counter to potential Western opponents such as the US Air Force's F-15 Eagle. It first flew in 1977, and in the course of its development phase one of the prototypes set several time-to-altitude records. Service entry began during 1985, and when the 'Flanker' started appearing at Western air displays in the hands of Sukhoi test pilots, starting at Paris in 1989, it astounded spectators with its manoeuvrability.
In the post-Soviet era, the original Su-27 series has continued to equip the Russian armed forces, and carried on serving with the Ukrainian Air Force as well as other former Soviet states and several export customers. The design has continued to be developed for both Russia and overseas markets, some of the latest derivatives incorporating thrust vectoring for even greater agility.
The Ukrainian Su-27s coming to Fairford for RIAT 2017 are on the strength of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade, based at Myrhorod in central Ukraine. One will take part in the flying display on the Saturday and Sunday of the show, while the other will go on static display. Also in the static park will be the support aircraft for the 'Flankers', an Ilyushin Il-76 four-jet transport.
The Air Tattoo became the first Western airshow to welcome Ukrainian participation when a Su-27 displayed at Fairford back in 1996. This year will mark the first time since 1999 that a Ukrainian 'Flanker' has given a flying demonstration at the event, though a single example appeared on static display in 2011. Confirmation of the aircraft's attendance at RIAT 2017 comes after a visit to Myrhorod by Wg Cdr Jonathan Nixon, the chairman of the Air Tattoo's flying control committee, for the purpose of observing and validating the Su-27's display.
RIAT chief executive Andy Armstrong said: "The return of the Ukrainian Su-27 this year is the result of a lot of hard work by the Air Tattoo team. I am delighted that the Ukrainian Air Force has made such a commitment to the show, and know that the 'Flanker' will be a major highlight in 2017."
